The Federal Employment Agency, based in Nuremberg provides services for the labor market as a federal agency , in particular job placement and job promotion , and regulates as the administrative body of the German unemployment insurance the financial compensation benefits , e.g. B. the unemployment benefit.
The BA is a self-governing, federal corporation under public law that is subject to legal supervision by the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. In a few areas, the ministry also has the right to issue directives and is responsible for technical supervision, e.g. B. in the unemployment statistics and the employment of foreigners.

As special departments of the Federal Employment Agency, the so-called family benefits offices are responsible for the implementation of tax family benefit equalization (e.g. child benefit ) and for the calculation and payment of the child supplement according to § 6a of the BKGG .

With around 113,000 (as of 2023) employees (of whom 42,900 work in the joint institutions (job centers) and 5,200 in the family fund), the Federal Employment Agency is one of the largest authorities in Germany and one of the largest employers in the federal government.

The offices of the BA at the regional level are referred to as regional directorates , at the local level as employment agencies .
